Skype application

Skype has released version 3.0 of its iOS application with full support for 3G video calling to other Skype members. This app will give FaceTime a run for its money, as Apple's video conferencing solution is currently limited to Wi-Fi only.

The Skype app of course supports audio calling for iPhones lacking a front facing camera and Skype text chat. Skype 3.0 is available now on iTunes for free and works on iPhones running iOS version 3.0 and later.

Skype first announced that it was developing a cellular data network (3G) compatible version of its popular video calling software in February of this year. Video quality depends heavily on available bandwidth, and as a result Wi-Fi video calls generally look better than those made over a 3G connection.

Skype boasts over 124 million monthly users, and was slow to bring 3G video calling to the iPhone due to quality concerns. Apparently the company did not collaborate or consult with AT&T, the exclusive wireless carrier of the iPhone in the US, about adding 3G video calling to its application. AT&T changed its data plans to a tiered model this year in an effort to conserve bandwidth on its struggling network.

Bandwidth needed for a video call will chew up many capped iPhone data plans if not watched. The app uses roughly 3 MB per minute when video calling over 3G. With all the talk of a Verizon iPhone in the works for early 2011 it's still unclear when official Skype video calling will come to Android. Verizon currently has an exclusive deal for Skype video calling on its Android smartphones in the US.

Sony is celebrating UK creativity with the launch of the new Bloggie™ Touch by inviting the public to submit their film concept with a script of just 140 characters or less via Twitter or Facebook.

The ‘Shape it. Shoot it. Share it’ competition, will see selected pitches texted to Sony's teams of film students to turn into cinematic reality.

They’ll need to react quickly and get creative to be in with a chance of sharing the £10k prize for the best film with the person who came up with the idea.

Anyone submitting an idea that gets made will win a BloggieTM Touch, the latest Sony digital video cameranow available in the UK.

To kick off the campaign, Sony has enrolled two students in London, armed them with a Bloggie™ Touch, some sticky tape and a whole lot of imagination. The phone is under $10 and performs faster than the same version Metro PCS sells for $99. The virgin mobile network is the Sprint network. It is better, faster, stronger. You can buy this phone anywhere for 10 bucks, and buy a $25 card and have a working cell phone and unlimited text and web for under $35 and you're on! No contracts, no hassles, hell you don't even have to give them your real name. I don't plan to stay on this phone but it has served me well. Virgin mobile just vastly reduced the price of their plans to include all data / texting / internet.

You only pay more for more minutes... $25 being the lowest 300 prime time minutes and unlimited nights and weekends, and $60 being unlimited everything, all the time. I am planning to upgrade to the LG Rumor Touch or Blackberry Curve. I was thinking of going to Metro PCS because of the samsung code, but metro pcs is slow and unreliable.

UPDATE!: I should ad that I went in and played with the Metro PCS Samsung Code today in one last test.

While the CODE is a wonderful phone - metro pcs web service sucks.. it is slow slow slow - even in NYC one of the main hubs! In the battle between boost, virgin mobile, and metro pcs, if you want any kind of speed - virgin mobile wins. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) feels it’s not getting credit for how strong sales of Android-powered phones are, so CEO Eric Schmidt is going on the offensive, telling shareholders that the company’s partners are shipping at least 65,000 handsets with the Google open-source operating system every day, according to AFP.

Schmidt’s comments follow market researcher NPD’s report that the dozen or so Android-based smartphones have out-sold Apple’s one and only iPhone. In February, Schmidt said that 60,000 Android devices were being shipped each day.

The NPD report ranked RIM’s BlackBerry in the top spot with 36 percent market share, while Apple’s OS fell to third at 21 percent, placing Google’s Android in the middle with 28 percent.

After announcing the latest figure highlighting Android’s place in the market, Schmidt complained that “if you check the blogosphere, you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low.” Nevertheless, the AFP article did not say if Schmidt discussed shipping numbers for Google’s own Nexus One handset.

Google is stressing the “openness” of its its system versus Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), which has recently come under fire for its tight control of what sort of software apps and websites can use on its iPhone and iPad devices.

While Apple remains ahead in terms of the apps available for its device, Schmidt said the company is willing to be patient. “While it’s true that we’re very happy to give away Android, the applications and the services that can be provided on a very large, very broad framework can be enormously valuable over the next five or 10 years.”

iPhone 3G Review

Apple released a new version of the iPhone operating system, iPhone OS 3.0, a spectacular free upgrade for all existing iPhones that adds over 100 impressive new features.

On the outside, the iPhone 3G S looks exactly like its predecessor. And, in fact, the iPhone 3G S fits perfectly in all of the iPhone 3G accessories I tested , including cases, screen protectors, speakers, car kits, chargers, docks, and more. But when you start actually using the iPhone 3G S, you'll immediately notice that it's not a plain old iPhone 3G. For one thing, it does most things noticeably faster. Startup? Faster. Launch the Mail app? Faster. Load a Web page in mobile Safari? Way faster.

Other improvements include a 3-megapixel camera with autofocus; easy video recording with basic editing and sharing; voice control for both phone and iPod features; and a Compass app that tells you which direction you are facing.

Everything works flawlessly. The camera takes better pictures. The video quality is amazing for a phone and the editing and sharing features are superb. Voice control is at least as good as any other phone I've used, though I do wish it worked with Bluetooth headsets. Even so, having my iPhone 3G S understand me when I say, "Play songs by the Beatles," totally rocks (pun intended). Finally, the Compass app integrates seamlessly with the Maps app to automatically orient maps to the direction you're facing, making the already excellent Maps application even more useful.

In addition to the iPhone 3G S features described above, there are more than 100 new features in iPhone OS 3.0, a free update now available to all current iPhone users via iTunes 8.2 or later.

Perhaps the most anticipated new feature is global Cut, Copy and Paste. It's elegantly implemented and easy to use. I was most impressed at how nicely it worked with every third-party app I tested, without requiring an update or upgrade to the app. And I love the clever way you undo your last edit by shaking your iPhone from side-to-side and then tapping the Undo button.

Global search is another welcome addition, enabling you to search contacts, email, calendars, notes, media, and apps. It's fast and convenient. My only complaint is that you still can't search for area codes, street numbers, cities, states, ZIP codes or phone numbers.

Another winner: You can now use the bigger landscape keyboard in the Mail, Messages (formerly Text), and Notes apps. My fat fingers are quite pleased.

But the features-I-didn't-know-I-needed-but-have-fallen-in-love-with are Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe. If you misplace your iPhone (or worse), merely log in to the MobileMe service ($99 a year) to see a map with the current location of your iPhone. You can then have your iPhone play a sound and/or display a text message such as, "Please return my iPhone. $$ reward. Call me at 555-222-1234." If that doesn't do the trick, you can then initiate a Remote Wipe to erase all of your personal data and restore your iPhone to its factory settings.

Prices start at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB; both require a 2-year AT&T contract.

We’ve been hearing about the possibilities of YouTube pushing mobile for awhile.

A few people we have talked with in the mobile industry have said that the company has been burning the midnight oil working on getting a mobile offering out as soon as possible.

Now it looks like YouTube CEO Chad Hurley said at an advertising conference that the company hopes to “have something on a mobile device within the next year.” YouTube already offers uploading from video-enabled phones, but hasn’t released any other major mobile services to date.

YouTube’s mobile strategy remains unclear, but the company has options. The company could do a carrier deal and work within the carrier deck or go straight to consumer. The company has a relationship with Cingular, though it’s strictly marketing for now, but carriers are way more squeamish about copyright issues than YouTube’s recent acquirer Google.

The company can build a WAP site and java client and go off deck — Google has often gone direct to consumer with mobile applications, though has been starting to do a few carrier deals more recently. Mobile YouTube on or off deck could actually dramatically grow wireless data usage, so the carriers will begrudgingly like them no matter what they do.

As many of you might already know, the Chinese government granted mobile phone carriers in the country licenses to deploy 3G networks in the area, and the roll-outs have already begun. As the highly anticipated advanced mobile services are expected to go live this year, states LG, the 3G mobile phone market in China should double next year, growing from 14 million units in 2009 to around 30 million units in 2010.

LG Electronics has been appointed one of the phone suppliers for China Mobile, the largest carrier in the country, as well as around the world when it comes to the number of subscribers. The wireless operator is set to offer its customers 3G mobile services based on the national developed TD-SCDMA technology.

In addition to the devices it will supply to China Mobile, the Korean phone maker will also supply China Telecom with about one third of the 3G devices it will need during the ongoing year, according to LG. China Telecom is the leading fixed-line phone company in the country, and it is set to deploy a 3G wireless network that is based on the CDMA 2000 technology.

We live in very tough times, as the worldwide recession rears its ugly head on the whole world, and big industry branches are starting to feel its effects. For a lot of the big gaming corporations, which were supposed to be safe thanks to their products, things aren't looking so good. Among them, Electronic Arts, Microsoft and even big electronics corporation Sony have already announced that they will employ some very drastic measures in order to ensure their own profitability.

One of the companies that were hit the hardest was Sony, as the Japanese corporation announced that a lot of layoffs would be made, and some of the manufacturing plants would be shut down in the near future. The reason for such harsh measures is the fact that people aren't buying electronic goods as they used to, with mobiles, Bravia LCD TVs, Cybershot digital cameras and PlayStation consoles sitting and collecting dust on the store shelves.

After the announcement made by the company's CEO, Howard Stringer, that headcount reductions would be made across all departments, including the gaming one, a lot of people were worried that the investments made by the Japanese company in the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles would decrease, thus making them even more unpopular with customers. But these people needn't worry, says Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves, as he recently issued an internal memo to all employees in which he states that the layoffs will affect the electronics department.

“This is still the case. He has just sent a message to employees here to that effect,” said a spokesperson for Sony. “As was the case with the previous Sony restructuring announcement, this mainly concerns our electronics business.”

Apple has warned iPhone owners who have used unauthorised programs to unlock the cellular service feature of their handsets that they may end up with a phone that doesn't work after the company's next software update for it.

Since the iPhone debuted in June, hackers have posted a number of methods online to make it possible to use the iPhone on cellular networks other than AT&T, which is the exclusive official carrier for the iPhone.

The news will come as a blow to scores of Australian iPhone enthusiasts who have brought the $US399 phones out to Australia and hacked them so that they can work on local mobile networks.

Apple executives say they have discovered that many of those unauthorised unlocking programs cause some software damage to iPhones.

Now, a software update that Apple plans to issue later this week that will add features such as accessibility to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store may end up making the touch-screen mobile phone completely inoperable if it has been hacked into.

"This has nothing to do with proactively disabling a phone that is unlocked or hacked," Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in an interview.

Samsung Blast appears on T-Mobile

T-Mobile announced availability of the Samsung Blast, a curious slider phone decked out in glossy black with red accents.

The Blast sports a larger keyboard with letters in a QWERTY arrangement sharing keys, about two to a key. We've seen similar layouts on the T-Mobile Pearl, and more significantly, on the Samsung SGH-T719.

Generally, we've found the idea to be successful, so we're interested in getting our hands on a review unit of the Blast. Along with the specialized keypad, the Blast also features presets for e-mail from services like AOL and Yahoo.

Otherwise, besides the design, the phone has a solid set of features, but nothing groundbreaking. Compared with the T719, you get the same 1.3-megapixel camera, the same 176 by 220 resolution screen.

Of course, the older phone had BlackBerry Connect software, for some serious e-mailing potential, but also cost twice as much as the Blast when it was originally released.

The Blast also features stereo Bluetooth support, and T-Mobile's popular MyFaves plan. It is available as of today, and can be had for $100 with a contract agreement.
